Here you’ll find the latest updates of the Fitness Playground initiatives for the Coronavirus (COVID-19). This is a member resource.
We understand that this time of crisis is difficult for everyone, especially for businesses. We are hopeful that you can be understanding to our situation and can see that we are taking every step to provide the safest possible environment for our members & staff.
As it stands from Government instruction, all Fitness Playground locations & The Bunker were closed from Midday at Monday 23-March.
We are currently building our Outdoor & Virtual classes to keep your training moving. Exercise isn’t the problem, it’s the solution.
On Sunday the 22nd of March, the government announced the closure of gyms. This is heartbreaking for us and our people, and I am sure for many others in our community. At the same time, we understand and respect this decision and remain positive about the future.
Exercise is not the problem, in fact, it is part of the solution as it helps to boost our immunity to protect us against this virus. This new way of living could last many months, so we must adapt quickly to keep ourselves healthy. Now is not the time to stop moving.
Our commitment is always to look after our members physical and mental wellbeing, and we know that keeping healthy is now more important than ever.
Working from home and self-isolating may be our new normal for a while. We have been asked to change the way we work and live, so we must also change the way we train.
As such, we have been working tirelessly behind-the-scenes to adapt to this crisis. And together, we will.

At least 4-6 classes per day will be running per location.
We will run Yoga and Pilates in the park, and Athletica Outdoors. Plus a Run Club.
Class numbers will be limited and social distancing measures will be stringently followed and enforced.

Our Marrickville outdoor venue will have a creche available for Mums and Dads looking to maintain their health.
We have received an overwhelming number of messages of support from our community. We have had countless members offer to continue paying their memberships and many other amazing gestures. We can’t thank you enough.
We are all committed to making sure that we have a gym to come back to when this is all over, and that our people can continue to earn a living. We are only a small business, and the government support alone will not be enough to keep us going or keep our people working. Any support that you can provide during this time will be greatly appreciated.
At the same time, many other people are affected by this crisis, and we want to help the community as much as we can. Whether it be an individual who lost their job and wants to keep training, or a small business who is affected and wants to collaborate. We are all in this together, and we will get through it, together.
We have set up a team that will be dedicated to helping those in need. We can be reached at email@example.com.
To start with, members who are affected by this crisis can contact us for free access to our new services.
We have designed options for you to get access to our Virtual Playground and Outdoor sessions.
We understand that this may not suit some people, however we hope that this gives you enough value to stick with us through this.

While this crisis is extremely challenging in many ways, there is so much to feel positive about. The Chinese word for “crisis” is two symbols: one that represents danger and the other representing opportunity.
This crisis gives us the opportunity to try new things, change our habits and set new goals. Social distancing could be a great time for a detox, working from home is the perfect opportunity to prepare your meals, and the closing of gyms is a great chance to train outside and connect with nature. There is always a silver lining. There is always an opportunity.
Thank you so much for supporting us, encouraging us, standing by us and one another.
We look forward to embracing this change together.
Justin and Serra
With the Government deeming it’s still safe to train in gyms, we have been working around the clock to ensure your training environment is the safest it can possibly be.
The world is changing, and it’s impacting how we work, how we live and how we train.
But exercise isn’t the problem, it’s the solution.
For those that can’t come in, we have worked closely with our team of Trainers & Instructors to create new ways to train.
We are going to keep exercising, but instead change your environment.
1. Outdoor Training.
We started as a Bootcamp, so moving back outdoors is a return to our happy place.
A comprehensive outdoor program will be run by our best teachers, with our best programs in the best locations.
Think of some of your favourites:
This will be launched over the next few days, please check our socials as well as refer to your APP / Timetable online for details.
Normal in-club classes will still be taking place.
2. Virtual Training.
We have developed content and an app. So your favourite coach and favourite workout is in your pocket.
Soon, you’ll be able to choose your environment – workout at home, outside or even at the beach. All with an expert coach.
We will also be running classes via Instagram live on @fitnessplaygroundaus. More information coming soon.
Many people are going through a difficult time at the moment. And as a small business, we need your support too. Our gyms are safe to train, and building your immunity through exercise is one of the strongest ways to fight off anything that tries to challenge the body. Whether that be in the gym, outside or at home, we’re here to help.
Please continue your training. Keep training with your local business.
We launched our New Class Booking Policy on March 6, 2020.
However, in consideration of the current circumstance and understanding that this is collectively a difficult time, we have made some changes effective from today.
The live date of our New Class Booking Policy will be pushed back from Wednesday, 1st April 2020 to Friday, 1st May 2020, meaning there will be no charges until then.
The late-cancellation window has been amended from 4 hours to 2 hours, allowing a better window for when life gets in the way.
We are taking this day by day and will update all of our members if there are any further amendments.
We want to thank those that have shared their feedback along the way and for being supportive of this new policy.
If you’d like to refer to it at any point in time, you can do so here.
Most businesses are waiting for their first COVID-19 case before they make the decision to test and sanitise their spaces. We’re not going to do that. We have had no confirmed cases of COVID-19, but are going to take the necessary steps to ensure our environment is truly safe for our members before anything occurs, not after.
We will be making the considerable investment into preventative terminal cleaning (also referred to as “infection” cleaning) to completely sanitise the entire space including all equipment and surfaces up 2.5m high.
This requires the facilities to be closed overnight, to allow for all surfaces to be cleaned and sanitised.
Bunker & FP Newtown.
Tonight, 17 March.
FP Marrickville & FP Surry Hills.
Tomorrow, 18 March.
We appreciate that it’s late notice, however the health & safety of our members and staff is our number one priority.
– All walls, vertical and horizontal surfaces up to 2.5 metres
– All gym equipment will have a full sterilisation from top surfaces to underlaying surfaces: freestanding weights and weight machines, ropes, cardio equipment
– All handles, hand rails, doors, door plaques and door knobs
– Lockers inside and outside
– Steam cleaning of all gym mats
– Steam cleaning of all hard and soft gym floors
– Office areas: phone handsets, screens, keyboards, cupboards and furniture
– Mirrors and fixed furniture
– Bathrooms will have a bleach pressure wash: showers, cubicles, toilet bowls, sinks, benches and seating
Following the cleaning and sanitising, post bio-testing will be done (ATP Testing). This testing detects down to 3µg of protein, essentially identifying through high-grade testing whether the environment is completely sanitised across all surfaces after cleaning.
Following this process, we are starting with a completely sanitised and disinfected space that has been tested and cleared. It is then critical for us to maintain this safe environment by following all hygiene protocols.
These protocols can be found here.
We reiterate that we have had no confirmed cases of COVID-19 and that this is a preventative measure, not a reactive one.
The goal is to ensure that you continue to be safe, and feel safe. You can rest assured that the gym you train in has been both tested and sanitized. Your health is our number one priority and we will make whatever investments and steps necessary to ensure both your safety and peace of mind.
We thank you for your patience and support during this time.
We know this is a difficult and uneasy time as the impacts of Coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to unfold.
Fitness Playground was created to be a safe space for all to train and it is our intention as a business is to keep it that way.
Taking into consideration the recent circumstance, we are making the following adjustments to all Fitness Playground locations, effective immediately until further notice:
– Increased daily hours of deep cleaning
– Removal of Yoga Blankets & Hand Towels from the MindBody studio (this studio will also remain locked when classes aren’t taking place)
– Each studio is provided with air spray, antibacterial wipes & natural spray disinfectant
In addition to our cleaning precautions & practices, we wanted to highlight the recent policies we have put into effect:
– Reduced class attendance to offer more space in classes
– Replaced all Aerial Yoga classes with either Yoga or Pilates
– Reduced usage of equipment in classes
– Adapted class format so you don’t need to share equipment with someone else, as well as
– Visual & verbal cueing where possible
The key things to note/bring:
1. We encourage you to bring your own yoga mat and/or boxing gloves
2. Please use the provided antibacterial wipes to disinfect the equipment used during each class
3. Don’t forget to bring a large towel to class (anyone who arrives without a towel will not be able to train)
4. Any classes that require shoeless activity, need to avoid being barefoot (socks to stay on)
Thank you for your help in maintaining a safe and healthy environment. There will be signage placed up in each studio, and your instructors will be there to guide you.
We appreciate your patience and support through this.
NSW Health has reinforced that it remains safe to go to the gym, but additional hygiene measures are required. See their post here.
We are taking this very seriously. There is nothing more important than the health and safety of our people. This can be seen in our actions.
Since Friday 13 March we have:
1. Installed signage with policies across all clubs.
2. Implemented daily deep cleans, with an emphasis on high touch surfaces.
3. Increased staff cleans from 2x a day, to 6x a day.
4. Implemented a no tolerance policy to towel usage (removed numerous members today). And made towels available for members who forget.
5. Built a webpage so as members and staff can get updates, live.
6. Conducted emergency meetings and training with all staff.
7. Reduced class numbers, to support social distancing.
8. Eliminated back to back Spin classes, to ensure a full clean is conducted between classes.
9. Instructed staff in classes to reduce (or eliminate) equipment sharing through creative programming.
10. Placed signs on all machines, supporting cleaning and hygiene policies.
+ many more!
We are currently working on outdoor training options and bootcamp options, to provide alternatives for members. And we are continuing to build more support, information and education for staff and members on best practices to provide the safest gym environment we can.
There is lots to do, and we are doing our very best! Thank you for the support from our members & staff.
The Government yesterday announced on Sunday 15 March that attending the gym is fine, as the risk of contracting Coronavirus (COVID-19) is still relatively low. Currently, we have had no confirmed cases of COVID-19, so it is still safe to train in our gyms. Read the full article here.
However, this does not mean being complacent when it comes to hygiene in our clubs.
A few things to note:
1. It is highly unlikely to transfer the virus through sweat.
2. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle (exercise, sleep and nutrition) ensures your immune system is strong.
3. Those who are unwell, are less likely to be going to places like the gym.
4. If general gym etiquette is followed, the chances of picking up the virus are very low.
However, we are still doing our part to increase safety for our staff and members and have detailed plans in each club. This plan is available here to view and has been in place since last week.
We have had thefts of toilet paper daily, hand soap daily, even the destruction of soap dispensers to steal the soap from inside.
This behaviour cannot continue, or we will be forced to close until our members can behave like a community and support each other through this difficult time for all. If we are forced to close, not only will this affect everyone’s ability to train which is vital for a strong immune system, but it will affect the livelihoods of all of our staff.
We are not a multi-national company with unlimited funds. We are a small business, we rely on the support of our members, and we ask you to support us as well as each other during this difficult time.
We need to work together.
Whilst our team is managing this the best way we can, there are thousands of members and around 30-40 of our staff in each location. Our gyms are open 24 hours a day, but we are not staffed 24 hours a day. Therefore, it is ultimately up to our members to work together to create a safe environment for themselves and each other.
There are several protocols we will be following, clearly outlined in club signage, including bringing a towel for each and every training session and avoiding being barefoot during training. If you do not bring a towel or train without shoes, please be aware that you may be asked to leave.
Our staff are receiving further training and support each day. And we will be doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our community. This is our priority.
I am confident that we can pull together as a community to protect ourselves and each other from this virus. But it is a collective effort.
We will keep you updated as we go along. Let’s work together to solve this and keep each other safe.
